Beyond the Resume

Family & Home
I grew up in Columbus, Ohio and attended The Ohio State University. At the end of 2020 I moved to McKinney, Texas with my wife and our daughter. We've since settled in Prosper, Texas and now have three daughters. Coaching the oldest two's recreational soccer teams is one of the highlights of my week.
From Actuary to Engineer
Before becoming a software engineer I was an actuary — I passed five SOA exams (P, FM, MFE, C, and MLC) and spent several years doing actuarial work at Nationwide Insurance and Aon. I discovered I genuinely loved building things with code, starting with Excel macros and VBA, and eventually taught myself full stack web development. That pivot turned out to be a great decision; I genuinely enjoy the work I do now.
Interests & Hobbies
I'm a casual college football fan — Ohio State, if you couldn't tell — though I'm more a fan of great storylines than anything. Joe Burrow's 2019 Heisman season is one of my all-time favorites in any sport. I golf occasionally (I'm not good, but I enjoy it). I played basketball and tennis growing up. I enjoy cube drafting Magic the Gathering when I get the chance, though like most things, it competes with three kids for time. I follow respected engineers in the JavaScript and TypeScript ecosystem, including people like Tanner Linsley and Matteo Collina, to stay current with emerging ideas and tooling. I enjoy keeping up with the space and feel fortunate to work in such an interesting field.
Personality
I'm analytical, direct, and more comfortable doing than talking about doing. I'm an introvert, though not shy; I prefer depth over breadth when it comes to people. I'm pretty casual and low-pretense — what you see is what you get. I've been told I have a good sense of humor, and I'll leave it at that.
A Bit More
Going into my freshman and sophomore years of college, I spent two summers volunteering with a Christian orphan care organization in Monterrey, Mexico. It was formative in ways that are hard to overstate, and they're experiences I look back on with a lot of gratitude.
